Our Music critical friend is Mrs Saunders and our Governors are Viv Neeley and Sarah Bonshor.

Statement of Intent

Alvaston Infant and Nursery School strives to inspire children to cultivate a love of music and develop their skills as musicians. Through quality first teaching, children are encouraged to explore a variety of genres and are nurtured to think about music with critical engagement. Children are provided with ample opportunities to compose and perform, in small or larger groups, raising their self-esteem and providing them with a sense of achievement. Children are taught to recognise that music can be used for various purposes and how different musical styles can convey a specific mood, intent or emotion. Through an understanding of pitch, duration, dynamics, tempo, timbre, texture, structure and appropriate musical notations children are able to extend this knowledge further to express their own feelings through music.

Why do we teach Music?

Music is a universal language that embodies one of the highest forms of creativity. A high-quality music education should engage and inspire pupils to develop a love of music and their talent as musicians, and so increase their self-confidence, creativity and sense of achievement. As pupils progress, they should develop a critical engagement with music, allowing them to compose, and to listen with discrimination to the best in the musical canon

Teaching our Early Years Musicians

Do they respond to a wide range of media and materials showing an understanding that they can manipulate and create effects with these?

Can they play alongside or with other children who are exploring new ideas?

Can they maintain attention and concentration when listening to others?

Can they listen to stories, songs and rhymes and asks for favourites?

Do they anticipates key events and phrases in rhymes and stories?

Can they introduce a storyline or narrative into their play?

Can they representation and respond, showing understanding that different media, music or materials will support the expression of their own ideas?

Can they uses a resource or material in a different or unusual way, showing intent as they do so?

Do they construct with a purpose in mind using a variety of resources to create a model, dance or composition?

Can they select appropriate resources and adapt work where necessary to create and change a piece of music, art, a picture or model?

Can they talk about features of their own and others’ work, recognising differences between them and the strengths of others?

Can they play cooperatively as part of a group to develop and act out a narrative?

Our Year One and Two Musicians will be taught…

To use their voices expressively and creatively by singing songs and speaking chants and rhymes

To play tuned and untuned instruments musically

To listen with concentration and understanding to a range of high-quality live and recorded music

To experiment with, create, select and combine sounds using the inter-related dimensions of music.
